"Bamboozled!

Looking back, I was bamboozled by the adults in my life. And you probably were, too.

Now I am not suggesting that the deceit was purposeful or malicious. On the contrary, I believe that when we were younger, the “grown-ups” around us were playing the role of adults: assuredly sharing advice about what we should and should not be doing, confidently making decisions, and masterfully using adulting-terms like goals, savings, and accountability. I think most of those adults innocently thought that the only lies they were telling us were about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and how far they had to walk in the snow to school (uphill both ways!).

But they were lying (yep, I said it; and I’m a Southern, Black woman who was punished as a child if it even looked like my mouth was about to form the word “lie”). I dare say many of the adults we were around during our youth being fake (and faking it) much of the time.

Not one “adult” told me that they had no idea what they were doing. Never did I guess that most of them were only slightly less clueless about navigating life than I was. Turns out, that until our last breath, we are always still trying to figure out life; learning that life is a series of lessons and that the smartest people in the world continue to seek teachers to guide them. In other words, class always remains in session and we are all on a path of continuous learning and improvement.

And now you have joined us here, with over twenty authors sharing some of the lessons we’ve learned along our individual journeys (even though we, too, remain in-school). Your presence tells me that you have realized a few things.

One, that you, too, have been bamboozled.

Two, life is the biggest and longest-lasting university in the world.

Three, you want to be on Life’s Honor Roll.

And four, you understand that we can all better accomplish our goals, feel supported and gain clarity when we rely on and learn from each other.
